And at that point there will be a choice at hand: Does Ontario merge the public and Catholic systems or as many activists and provincial greens support? Or does it widen the choice, as BC and other provinces do?

“I used to think a merger was the only remotely conceivable option. But then, Mr. Dorval’s story, and Ms. Soupcoff’s, make me hopeful that momentum might eventually build towards a funding model that privileges choice over unity — government funding, portable subsidies or both,” says the author.
