What is OFIS?

The Ontario Federation of Independent Schools (OFIS) is a legally incorporated, duly constituted association of independent schools, established in 1974.

OFIS provides visible, standard-setting leadership to member schools because because - "parents have a prior right to freely choose the kind of education that shall be given to their child"
(1948 UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights)

OFIS Believes That Independent Schools...
  • produce responsible citizens and productive members of society in the province of Ontario
  • should be legally and publicly recognized as top quality educational choices in the province of Ontario
  • should meet or exceed the standards of the Ontario curriculum and should be accountable for standards of literacy and numeracy
  • should remain autonomous with respect to hiring standards, admissions standards and governance standards
  • are entitled to financial government support since the Ontario government is obligated to provide for the education of EVERY child in the province (as determined in The Education Act)

Why Parents Choose Independent Schools...
  • Parents are the best qualified and want to be in the "driver's seat" in determining the best type of education for their children based on their needs (which may be religious, cultural or pedagogical)
  • Children can benefit from a better guarantee of strong academics, individual attention, smaller calssroom sizes and more effective teacher-student ratios found in independent schools
  • Families thrive in schools where parents are more directly involved in the school's operations as is the case in many independent schools. Parents are often involved in decision-making, policy and program development and volunteering in the school community
