Principals Course Part One

Foundations of Independent School Operations in Ontario

Exclusive to OFIS and open to any independent elementary or secondary school leader in Ontario, this course explores the roles and responsibilities of independent school principals and provides an understanding of the diverse and growing sector and our place in the education landscape.

What You Will Learn

Critical concepts and key resources for independent school leaders will be explored in depth, including:

  • The Private Schools Policies and Procedure Manual

  • The independent school sector’s relationship with the Ministry of Education

  • Responsibilities of the private/independent school principal

  • Understanding the validation process and preparing for the inspection

Additional topics of discussion will include:

  • Current trends and considerations in Human Resources for independent schools (hiring practices, employment contracts, etc.)

  • Marketing and student recruitment

  • Policy development

Whether founding a new school or taking on a new leadership role in an established school, this course will provide the core knowledge and introduce the skills required to operate an independent school in Ontario successfully.

Instructed by highly experienced school leaders and former leaders of the Private Schools and International Education (PSIE) Unit at the Ministry of Education, this course allows school leaders and administrators to develop a critical understanding of the legislative obligations and regulatory policies specific to independent schools in Ontario.

What will I leave with at the end of this course that I didn't have before?

School leaders will leave this course confident in the intricate knowledge and understanding of ministry requirements and how to fulfill them, armed and resourceful with the tools needed to build and lead a school in compliance with those requirements. You will feel more reassured of your place in the landscape and of the external factors that shape the future of your school. Participants will receive a certificate at the end of the successful completion of this course.

Am I eligible for this course?

This course is for new independent school principals and vice principals, and those preparing to transition to these new leadership roles, as well as individuals in the process of founding an independent school.

Are there any prerequisites for this course?

No, part one requires no prerequisites, but completion of part one is a prerequisite to part two.

The course entails 24 synchronous hours over four days, and approximately six hours of reading and reflection time.

This course is offered twice per year (Spring and Fall sessions) and is held virtually.

Registration is limited, as smaller study groups allow for individualized attention and careful connections to your specific school
